Description
Death Valley is one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, and therein lies its beauty. This is the road to Badwater, the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere at 282 feet below sea level. It's one of the many contradictions experiences in Death Valley. Directly behind Badwater, 5,000 feet straight up, is Dante's View. I've been in Badwater in shorts and a t-shirt in balmy 80-degree weather, only to need to put on a jacket and see snow at Dante's View. Badwater is also in the shadow of 11,000-foot Telescope Peak, whose shadow covers the area in the late afternoon.
This particular spot is near Artists Drive, one of the most colorful areas of the park. I've been down this road dozens of times but this time it caught my attention.
While it did rain while we were there I added the lightning. It seemed apt.
